Intelligent Mobility and Transportation Systems

The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) develops forms for safer and sustainable traffic and transportation systems.

Activities

Safe Mobility

The goal is to increase safety and security for individuals including e.g. ICT for active safety in cars, cooperative vehicles, data and communication security, safety and security of mobility systems. Through advanced ICT and cooperative systems we will be able to inform and warn drivers of upcoming dangers, such as broken down or slow driving vehicles. We also focus on secure data transfer and data management for stable systems and trust in new business relations and services.

Autonomous Mobility

For the upcoming decades, vehicles are becoming more and more autonomous. In this activity we focus on:

  • ICT for enabling autonomous behaviour of transportation means such as vehicle sensor data, sensors in the infrastructure etc.
  • ICT related to problems in Human Computer Interaction of responsibility share between passengers and vehicles

Accessible Mobility

Efficient mobility is a key success factor for the modern society. We aim to make mobility universally accessible through:

  • ICT for individual accessibility including barrier-free access and support for people with special needs.
  • ICT for economical optimization of mobility and transportation. This includes for example improving networking between different modes of transport through integrated solutions for trip planning and real-time access to information on available transport modes(online information at home, in vehicles, train stations, bus stops, on smart phones)

The goals for Accessible Mobility include:

  • Providing “on demand” services for mobility to offer maximum flexibility in the usage of different transport modes and easy access modalities for high user acceptance
  • Driving internationalization of communication technologies usable for ITS to save development time and cost
  • Achieve interoperability of systems and services on a global level by joint standards and customer-friendly administration

Sustainable Mobility

The goal is to create ICT enablers for the market introduction of electric cars. The enablers include user-centric systems such as prediction of mobility demands and route profile, mobile systems for booking and accessing fleet vehicles as well as platforms for service provisioning and billing.

Social Mobility

In Social Mobility we focus on:

  • Connecting social networks with street networks and
  • Vehicles becoming a “social persona”

The application areas include:

  • Reducing aggression in road traffic by neutralizing anonymity and the perception of the vis-à-vis as opponents (connection point to SAFE mobility)
  • Exploiting the community effects as additional motivational factor for ecological, safe driving (connection points to SUSTAINABLE and SAFE mobility)
  • Using the existing social network as a basis for innovative car share/fleet concepts and cross modal mobility solutions (connection points to SUSTAINABLE and ACCESSIBLE mobility)
  • Allowing an intuitive and appealing way of communicating with vehicles(from diagnostic memory to chat messages)

Impact assessment

Linking social and street networks

Develop methods and tools to assess impact of all three ITS domains with regard to technical performance, user acceptance, resource efficiency and economic potential.

Legal and liability issues

Collaborate with experts to address issues such as data protection, privacy, certification and product liability.

Expected Results

Besides achieving measurable research results in all activities, we expect to create business cases and joint ventures for fast market introduction of ITS and services.
