Trento RISE

Trento RISE

Trento RISE is the new ICT pole for excellence, located in the Trentino Region, in the heart of one of the most innovative areas of Italy and Europe, where per capita public investments for R&D are higher than the European average, and where a number of research, academic and industrial centers are already established.

Trento RISE has three main objectives: promoting research that produces added value to people, markets and society; offering academic and business training to the most talented students; generating economic development through innovative projects that satisfy important social needs.

Trento RISE is focused on improving life quality through ICT; in achieving this purpose it is supported by a network of thematic labs located all over the Trentino Region, interconnected by a highly sophisticated technological infrastructure, usable for widespread experimentation. Trento RISE puts man at the center of its research, in terms of social relations and all aspects of living: from aging to tourism, from well-being to education.

Today, just a little over a year from its creation, Trento RISE is already one of the major drivers for the transformation of the Trentino Region into a knowledge economy that is competitive at a global level, while ensuring the sustainability of its development and responding to the needs of its society.

Trento RISE is headed by Professor Fausto Giunchiglia, President, and by Doctor Paolo Traverso, CEO. It came into being from the association of two of the top players of the Italian ICT: the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science (DISI) of the University of Trento, and the Center for Information Technology - Irst of the Bruno Kessler Foundation (FBK).

FBK

FBK is a dynamic and interdisciplinary entity, based on focused research to push innovation. Operating for over forty years, FBK boasts more than 350 researchers, 7 labs, 5 research centers and, just in the last two years, 9 spin-offs in the ICT field. Its activities have been focused mostly in the strategic sectors of ICT, materials technology and microsystems technology; however, FBK is also involved in humanistic fields, such as Italian-Germanic and Religious Studies. All this has given the Foundation the opportunity to develop a close-knit network of alliances and cooperation at the international level.

The Center for Information Technology - Irst of FBK pays particular attention to the development of new-generation services and delivery platforms for improving individual and societal quality of life. Trento RISE improves and develops the achievements already reached in the field.

University of Trento

University of Trento is a mid-sized university among the most renowned in Italy. It hosts a large international student and academic community, attracted by the high quality standards of the university itself, and also by the excellent life-style offered by the Trentino Region. The special characteristic of the University of Trento has always been its particular sensitivity to change and innovation: it's no coincidence that it boasts, for example, the oldest faculty of Sociology in Italy, and an ICT International Doctoral School, where 70% of the student body comes from foreign nations.

Thanks to the University of Trento, that consists of seven departments (Arts and Humanities; Cognitive Sciences; Economics; Engineering; Law; Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences; Sociology), Trento RISE can rely on a large number of researchers for work on interdisciplinary aspects of ICT: economy and innovation, cognitive and social preconditions and implications for technological changes, computational linguistics, digital libraries, and others.
