The EIT ICT Labs partners in Rennes (*) will welcome Willem Jonker for a full day session on Feb 28th.

This will be a day of intense discussions:

The morning session will gather decision makers from the EIT ICT Labs partners in Rennes, as well as other key players, institutionals and politics. They will share on the Rennes and EIT ICT Labs strategies and synergies.

The afternoon session will be open to a larger audience of the EIT ICT Labs partners’ representatives. It will be the occasion for an update on the EIT ICT Labs operations and business plan. It will also illustrate the innovation potential in Rennes in a couple of areas of excellence: medias & contents, 4G mobile networks, interaction and VR, cloud computing.

This visit takes place at a time where the position of Rennes as a capital-city in ICT was just confirmed by the recent labeling by the French government of the B-Com Institute of Research and Technology (IRT) under the national program ‘Investissements d’Avenir’ (‘Invest for the Future’). Gathering industrials, SMEs and research labs, B-Com will be one of the only 2 IRTs in ICT in France. It will focus on the networks, medias and contents of the future.

CPS Action Line Roadmapping Workshop

February 22-23, 2012 at fortiss research center, Munich, Germany

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) – the tight integration of computation and physical processes in software-intensive embedded systems connected to globally networked digital services – are considered the next computing revolution and a disruptive technology, opening completely new areas of innovation and novel business platforms, but also posing huge challenges to the design, development, exploitation and evolution of such systems.
In 2012, EIT ICT Labs launches a new action line to address the challenges in the field of cyber-physical systems. The activity 12121 “Cyber-Physical Systems Engineering Challenges and Business Opportunities” aims at integrating EIT ICT Labs' key players in CPS from academia and industry to build up a strong community, and to define the scope and strategy for the new action line in this field.

The goal of the workshop is to gather EIT ICT Labs partners active in the field of cyber-physical systems, to form a common view on the key challenges for CPS in both research and business, to identify main focus topics that need to be addressed in response to these challenges, and to provide a forum where participants have the opportunity to team up with other partners to initiate potential activities for the action line.
Call for Presentations
EIT ICT Labs community members are invited to contribute to the workshop by submitting talks. We specifically call for presentations with a programmatic touch, where participants outline their interests in CPS, their related current activities and on-going projects, personal views on key issues, and motivation for contributing to the action line. Participants are also encouraged to prepare brief presentations on ideas for potential activities for the action line.

In order to compile an interesting workshop program, we would like to ask you to provide a title and brief outline of your talk (an abstract of one paragraph to ½ a page) by sending an email to the address given below, preferably on or before February 15.
It is planned to organise the workshop around contributed talks, breakout sessions focussing on specific CPS topics to discuss and identify related key challenges, and a forum to present ideas for future activities.
The workshop is open to all EIT ICT Labs members; however, for planning purposes registration is required. Please indicate your intention to participate by contacting Holger Pfeifer (
). More information about the workshop organisation, including directions and hotel recommendations, will follow. A detailed agenda will be provided once the contributed talks are known.

Internet of Things Day at SICS on February 9, 2012

February 9, Kista, Electrum

The future Internet is often described as the increasing amount of connected devices around us – that we are entering the networked society. So far we’ve only seen the beginning of the Internet of Things (IoT), but by the year 2020 there will be billions of devices communicating via mobile networks, WLAN and other solutions.
To highlight the possibilities and challenges connected to IoT a conference is being held at SICS, in Kista, Sweden on February 9. Keynote speakers are Mike Kuniavsky, Orangecone, USA and Bu Fanjin, CESI (China Electronics Standardization Institute), China as well several key researchers in Sweden and representatives from the industry.

February 9 is also the day the Swedish Internet of Things Centre is launched, an event led by Professor Kristina Höök at SICS in collaboration with Ericsson, Microsoft, KTH, Mobile Life@Stockholm University, Wisenet, Swedish ICT etc.
- We need a strong vision and understanding of what we should use the Internet of Things for, says Kristina Höök. So we decided to focus on the consumers – a different approach than the usual technology driven research initiatives.
The Internet of Things Day is arranged by SICS and is sponsored by VINNOVA and EIT ICT Labs.

Engineering and Trento RISE inaugurate ESTRO lab in Trento

Trento, 16 January 2012

Trento Node core partners
and
inaugurate ESTRO "Engineering Society and Territory Research Office", the research laboratory for the development of innovative models in the context of the international network of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. More than thirty highly qualified researchers will work at the ESTRO laboratory.
The event will take place on Monday, 16 January 2012 at 11:30 am in the headquarters of Trento RISE in via Sommarive 18, Povo Trento, on the 2nd floor of the North Building, Room 102.
Lorenzo Dellai, President of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Michele Cinaglia, Chairman of Engineering, and Fausto Giunchiglia, Chairman of Trento RISE, will be present to address the theme of "Innovation, Prospects and Opportunities for ICT in Trentino".
Stefano De Panfilis, Engineering's chief innovation officer, will introduce a Round Table on "Public-Private Partnerships as a lever for territorial development (the local, national and European dimensions)". Angelo Marino of the European Commission, Giordano Tamanini, President of Innovative and Technological Services of Confindustria Trento, Roberto Saracco, Trento Node Director, Dario Avallone, Director of Research and Development at Engineering Group, Paolo Traverso, CEO of Trento Rise, and Riccardo Pietrabissa, Head of CNR's ICT Department, will participate.

- Inauguration of the ESTRO laboratory, says Dario Avallone, Director of Research and Development at Engineering, offers the opportunity to reinforce the links already in place with local realities and to enhance competencies through the creation of a public-private research centre. In fact, the centre aims for recognition as a national and European pole of excellence through joint work on various issues.
- In this sense, a first test will be common work on technologies for next-generation search engines. The CUbRIK project, an important initiative in this area, is an example of how such European Commission-financed collaboration between Engineering and Trento RISE can be effective.

About 350 researchers and innovation specialists of the group are currently working in different laboratories on over thirty research projects in collaboration with an international network of over 150 academic and industrial partners. ESTRO is a further important milestone in this direction.

-The inauguration of the ESTRO laboratory at Trento RISE confirms the will of the Autonomous Province of Trento to become a territorial leader in innovation, and at the top even in the ICT sector, in line with the objectives of Europe 2020, says Fausto Giunchiglia, Chairman of Trento RISE.
- This shows once again that the Trentino model of partnership between public and private is a successful model and an extraordinary lever for local development.

According to Paolo Traverso, CEO of Trento RISE, working alongside important industrial partners such as Engineering is essential for transforming our small autonomous community into a knowledge economy, that is an economy of knowledge serving as a laboratory for Italian and foreign companies, to the benefit of Trentino families and businesses. The fact that Trento is home to the sixth full EIT ICT node greatly increases the attractiveness of Trentino on all fronts, and ESTRO is the proof.
