Multitouch wall@CEBIT

Hannover, March 6, 2012 - EIT ICT Labs and MultiTouch Ltd. presented the First 3D Motion Sensing...

Hannover, March 6, 2012 - EIT ICT Labs and MultiTouch Ltd. presented the First 3D Motion Sensing Multitouch Wall at the opening day of CeBIT 2012

Smart space research results in the integration of a five-meter-wide MultiTouch wall with Kinect 3D motion sensing camera. The reseachers have solved the problem how to attract people to use the multitouch display wall. The multitouch wall with 3D motion sensing cameras reacts to new potential users passing by and lures them to touch the wall and explore the content when they approach it.

On the interactive wall made of eight MultiTaction® Cell 55” modular multi-user touch displays and four Microsoft Kinect® 3D motion sensing cameras, visitors can playfully learn about EIT ICT Labs activities using a user interface developed by EIT ICT Labs researchers.

Watch a video at <link http://youtu.be/ksfr9Q1P738>http://youtu.be/ksfr9Q1P738

“The wall is an example of how EIT ICT Labs boosts European competitiveness by bringing academic research, education and business together,” says Professor Marko Turpeinen, Node Director EIT ICT Labs Helsinki. “Cooperation with MultiTouch has brought added value to both parties.”
The goal of EIT ICT Labs researchers has been to learn more about and develop concepts for delivering information in public spaces using large interactive displays. MultiTouch Ltd. has provided researchers with support and information from real use cases from all around the globe. This cooperation enabled the scientific knowledge to be transferred immediately into this new business tool.
MultiTouch Ltd. was originally established by researchers from Aalto University, which is one of the core partners of EIT ICT Labs Helsinki. The company has already sold interactive displays in over 40 countries around the world and recently launched its third generation MultiTaction product line.
“The display array, made of stackable MultiTaction Cells, recognizes unlimited touch points which means we can accommodate a very large number of users. The Bubblescreen application using Kinect was developed by EIT ICT Labs with MultiTouch Cornerstone SDK. It is a fantastic example of how by merging technologies we can create new, innovative ways for human-computer interaction,” said Hannu Anttila, VP Sales of MultiTouch Ltd.
The installation can be found at EIT ICT Labs stand in Hall 26, Stand F50 at CeBIT from 6 to 10 March 2012.
For further information, please contact:
Prof. Marko Turpeinen, Node Director EIT ICT Labs Helsinki on +358 50 597 0931 or email: marko.turpeinen@ictlabs.eu
Hannu Anttila, VP Sales, MultiTouch Ltd. on +358 50 385 5515 or email: Hannu@multitouch.fi
About CEBIT Installation
The Bubblescreen installation utilizes 8 MultiTaction Cell 55” Full HD LCD displays and 4 Microsoft Kinect motion sensing cameras to make an impressive five meter wide display with more than 15 million pixels. It is based on the Kupla user interface developed by Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT at Aalto University. Overall there are 260 cameras used to track gestures in this installation. The application was created with C++/OpenGL using MultiTouch Cornerstone SDK. Additionally, the installation has four audio channels for different sections of the wall equipped with Panphonics directional speakers.

Trifense wins EIT ICT Entrepreneurship Award

Brussels, 21 February 2012

The
were announced in Brussels on February 21 as part of the first Entrepreneurship Summit, organised by EIT and Science Business.
"I am very proud on the really innovative and diverse start-ups we brought to the competition", says EIT ICT Labs CEO Willem Jonker. "Each of them a worthy candidate and well presenting. I congratulate Trifense winning the first EIT Entrepreneurship Award."
The finalists in short:

Trifense.
The company is a spin-out from the Technical University of Berlin. The business concept is to develop defense technology driven by innovation, integrity and intelligence. Trifense’s self-learning technology allows models of “normality” to be learnt through incoming data known as network packet payloads. In this way, any deviation from the models can be detected and unknown cyber-threats entangled with the payloads can be recognised.
The main difference between this and more traditional technology is that Trifense does not rely on any kind of pre-written description of the attack to spot the trouble coming. Protecting a company or organisation against known cyber-security threats is one thing - protecting them against unknown cyber-threats is quite another.

Blaast
Smartphones are too expensive for emerging markets but the business concept of Blaast is to bring mobile apps and a smartphone user experience to the next billion people. Blaast is working together with mobile network operators in creating a unique subscription based app store offering, which offers developers recurring revenues in addition to huge subscriber bases.
Blaast provides users with a robust, well-designed and functional platform. Developers will create great apps for hundreds of devices and reach millions of users. And operators deploying Blaast will be able to convert large numbers of voice users into active data users.

Smart Signs
Ever get lost in a building? Smart Signs Solutions business idea is to develop personalised signage that can point the way for each visitor in a business, hospital or other big building
An example of the impact on society is reducing the time spent in guiding people in hospitals and improving the well-being of patients. Hospital research demonstrated that in a facility of some 800 beds, no fewer than 8,000 hours (four person-years) of professional time was lost in redirecting patients and visitors to their destinations.
This is exclusive of the time that the professionals themselves lose in trying to find their way about - particularly when they are new on the job. It does not take into account the hidden costs that result from delayed professional interventions, which may critically affect patients. Additionally, when visitors and patients have problems finding their way, they feel helpless, frustrated and stressed.

The Conference addressed in particular researchers interested in new options for developing their careers by moving to or returning to Europe. For them it was an opportunity to engage in and contribute to the discussion with high-level policy makers, top researchers and business leaders.
In his presentation, CEO Willem Jonker showed how EIT ICT Labs contribute to the vibrant science and technology culture in Europe that offers excellent career and funding opportunities for researchers and innovators - no matter where they come from in the world.
EIT ICT Labs equips students, researchers, academics and business people with skills for creativity, risk taking spirit and entrepreneurial capacity. Boosting existing activities towards world-class performance and leveraging existing regional, national and EU-level funding instruments is the foundation.
Willem Jonker guided the audience through the journey that EIT ICT Labs has taken from the establishment of the first European co-location centres, to implementing specific processes and models that today enables supporting start-ups, coaching SME's and entrepreneurs, as well as enhancing the use and accessibility of pan-European test-beds ( e.g. FITTING project).
Launching the EIT ICT Labs Master School, that includes a unique programme in ICT Innovation for entrepreneurial ICT students with a broad European perspective and establishing the first EIT ICT Labs Industrial Doctoral Training Centres, shows that we within Europe is serious in our ambition to attract new talent to complement and catalyse the talent we already have.
Willem Jonker also had the pleasure to personally meet with RTD Commissioner Màire Geoghegan-Quinn during the European Career Fair that took place the following day, January 21st, at MIT. This Fair offered an opportunity to facilitate matching between European employers and some of the brightest researchers who are interested in a career in Europe and increase the awareness in the US of the opportunities that European research offers.
The European Commission is partnering with the ECF since 2007 to promote Europe as a great place to pursue a career in science and technology, be it in industrial research, research organizations, academia or science policy. EU Member States will promote participation by their national research organizations and companies engaged in research.

Finnish smart energy startup on the rise

Asema Electronics Ltd from Finland won a special prize at the Slush 2011 start-up event early...

Asema Electronics Ltd from Finland won a special prize at the Slush 2011 start-up event early November in Helsinki. The winner gets the chance to meet with leading European investors at the EIT ICT Labs Business Club in Paris early December. Asema Electronics is a specialist in bringing smart energy to consumers.

- Asema Electronics won because of their innovative, sustainable approach, scalability of the business and good growth opportunities in Europe. It also links closely to our smart energy action line, explains Mika Naumanen, lead for the Business and Entrepreneurs Club activities at EIT ICT Labs.
Reducing electricity consumption by more than 10%
The Asema E electricity saver intelligently controls lights and appliances but also helps consumers buy cheaper electricity. It aims to reduce the household or office electricity consumption by 10% and pay the investment back in two years.
- You can centrally control all your appliances and lighting and even do this remotely. For example if you have left your coffee machine on at home, you could switch it off from your office, explains Jani Hursti, CEO of Asema Electronics. The system connects directly to the Nordic power market NordPool and knows the exact price of electricity 36 hours beforehand. It automatically helps consumers in getting the full benefit of market price fluctuations by running heaters, chargers, and home appliances like the dishwasher when electricity is cheap.

Huge market potential
Dr. Jani Hursti founded the company in March 2011 when he bought a smart socket spin-off from VTT, Widsen Oy, and merged it to his own company that developed an energy display. Asema Electronics now employes seven persons and is based at Aalto Venture Garage in Otaniemi, Finland. After pilots in Sweden and Norway their product Asema E is ready for launch.
- We are thrilled by the opportunity offered to us by EIT ICT Labs to meet with leading European investors. The problems we face with climate change and saving energy are pan-European, so finding the right European partners is key to our success, Jani Hursti points out. With 250 million smart meters expected to be installed in Europe by 2020, and a 10% reduction in user’s electricity bill, Asema Electronics market looks very promising. Asema Electronics has been named a finalist in the Finnish National Innovation Awards of 2011.
For more information :

Slush 2011 – leading start-up event in Northern Europe
Slush is the leading start-up conference in Northern Europe that brought together the best start-ups in the Nordic region, top VCs from Europe and Silicon Valley, angel investors, and tech industry professionals in Helsinki, Finland. There were 100 start-up pitches. The winner of the first prize was Ovelin, a company who has also been awarded for the best learning game in 2011, with their WildChord concept on making people enjoy learning to play an instrument. Asema Electronics was the first runner-up.
For more information:
